Locations & MMM

Urban. Regional. Rural. Remote. All of Australia is on the map.

Medlink recruits across every region classification in Australia — urban metro clinics through to MMM 6–7 remote practices. Here is how the map works, and why so many of the best career moves happen outside the city.

The MMM framework

Modified Monash Model 1 through 7.

The Modified Monash Model (MMM) classifies Australian locations by remoteness and population. It determines DPA status, workforce incentives and — for many overseas doctors — the speed of the Medicare provider number pathway.

MMM 1 • Metropolitan

Major city centres. Highly competitive but rewarding GP and hospital appointments.

MMM 2 • Regional centres

Large regional towns with full services. Great lifestyle, short commutes and meaningful patient relationships.

MMM 3–4 • Large & medium rural towns

Strong community, rich case mix, often with genuine relocation incentives from practices and state government.

MMM 5 • Small rural towns

Generalist scope with hospital and ED exposure. Ideal for doctors who want breadth and autonomy.

MMM 6–7 • Remote & very remote

The deepest scope of practice in Australia. Significant incentives, travel allowances, and unmatched career stories.

DPA explained

Distribution Priority Areas — and what they mean for you.

DPA is the geographic lever that controls where overseas trained doctors can access Medicare benefits through the Section 19AB framework. Medlink helps candidates read the map correctly: where DPA applies, how MMM tiers interact, and how long the moratorium really runs in each scenario.
Why so many doctors choose rural

Moving outside the metro map can be the best career decision you ever make.

Stronger earnings

Many rural and remote roles pay above metro rates, with practice incentive payments, subsidised housing and relocation allowances on top.

Fellowship & Medicare pathways

DPA / DWS and Section 19AB designation in MMM 2–7 unlocks Medicare benefits earlier for many overseas-trained GPs.

Deeper case mix

Continuity of care from prevention to emergency. You see the full arc of patient lives — not 10 minutes of it.

Real lifestyle upside

School runs without a freeway. Beaches, bush, country towns — the Australia people actually move here for.

Family & housing support

Practices and health services often support with housing, schooling introductions and spouse employment conversations.

Clear moratorium roadmap

For IMGs subject to 19AB, rural placements can be the smartest route through the moratorium with strong long-term outcomes.
